Join distinguished guests Frank Delaney and Mary Pat Kelly for a discussion of the challenges and attractions of the historical novel, the relationship between historiography and fiction, the response of the reader to different genres, and readings from their new novels, Shannon and Galway Bay. Moderated by Eileen Reilly.

Frank Delaney was born in Tipperary. He was a broadcaster with RTE and BBC Northern Ireland. Later he moved to London where he began to work in arts broadcasting. Delaney wrote and presented The Celts, a six part television series, seen in forty countries. In 1979, his first book, James Joyce's Odyssey was published to critical acclaim and best-seller status. Since then, Delaney has written five other books of non-fiction, twelve novels, one novella, and short stories. In Shannon, a young American war hero, suffering shell-shock after his experiences in the First World War, comes to Ireland to trace the river of his ancestors and try to find his way in the world again but stumbles headlong into the Irish Civil War. Shannon is the third of Delaney’s Irish historical novels, preceded by Ireland (2005) and Tipperary (2007).

Mary Pat Kelly is an author and filmmaker. Her award-winning PBS documentaries and accompanying books include To Live for Ireland, a portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume and the political party he led; Home Away from Home: The Yanks in Ireland, a history of U.S. forces in Northern Ireland during World War II.  Based on the life of Mary Pat’s great, great grandmother, Honora Kelly, Galway Bay spans six generations and traces the experience of an Irish family from the Great Hunger to Chicago and from the American Civil War to the Irish Revolution.
